The Program

International experience is becoming more essential to today’s employers. Hong Kong is a fast-paced, dynamic city with professionals from all over the world. The Hong Kong Summer Internship Program offers students the opportunity to gain professional experience abroad in one of the world's most important cities. Our interns are placed in a wide range of fields including accounting, finance, international business, hospitality, legal services, marketing and communications, media and creative industries, and fashion. Successful candidates are clear about their interests and goals in advance of their summer arrival and are prepared to work hard by fully immersing themselves within a new culture. Students will also have the opportunity to explore the city through various social and cultural opportunities included in the program.

*Due to Hong Kong visa restrictions, students must be 18 years or older to participate in this program. In addition, Chinese citizens must be sophomores or juniors in order to be eligible for participation in the program.

Internship Placements

OIP staff and Absolute Internship coordinate placements and provide in-country support for BC students interning in Hong Kong. Absolute Internship staff in Hong Kong draw on an extensive network to identify individual placements based on student skills, prior work experience, interests, and academic or professional goals. From computer science to hospitality management, the placement team provides intellectually engaging internships for students across a broad range of industries. All internships are conducted in English.

All internships are unpaid due to foreign labor and visa regulations.

Finances

Students will be billed for summer programs via their Agora account in early May, and payment is due prior to departure. Any questions related to billing should be directed to Student Services.

Three separate costs are billed to Agora:
  • Program fee ($6,600)
  • GeoBlue international health insurance ($100)
  • Enrollment fee ($45)
Students are responsible for coordinating and paying for their own travel to Hong Kong and budgeting for meals and personal expenses not covered by the program fee. Details on housing and meals is included below.

Please consult our Summer Finances & Scholarships page for additional information on program costs and funding opportunities.

HousingHong Kong interns

Students will be housed with one roommate (another intern from the U.S. and/or other English-speaking country) in a hotel for the duration of their time abroad. Living spaces in Hong Kong are small, due to very high real estate costs. Students can expect to commute 30-50 minutes each way to their internships via public transportation.

Academic Component

As a complement to the internship, all students will complete a one-credit course, which will consist of guided cultural reflection through frequent, informal written assignments.

*Please note that, per Boston College policy, only one internship may be counted toward graduation requirements. Any additional internships will be recorded as enrichment only.

Travel Information

Students are responsible for making their own travel arrangements to and from Hong Kong.
